Although Bill Scruggs died of cancer at the age of 58 years, this country lawyer from Fort Payne had an enormous impact on his professions.
Following Bill's death in 2001 former Chief Justice Bo Torbert referred to Bill Scruggs as the "best lawyer in Alabama." Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Sam Beatty described him as "a warrior in the cause of justice."
Bill's devotion to the legal profession led him to become president of the Alabama Bar Association. The hallmark of his legal career is the work he did to improve professionalism and instill the importance of the highest ethical standards. As Justice Sam Beatty said: "much of the essential nature of the Alabama Bar bears the stamp of his interest. In that he is truly first among equals."
In Bill's personal resume he listed shooting sports as his favorite pastime. He hunted wild game throughout the United States and around the world, including Afghanistan, Africa, Argentina, Austria, Germany, Iran, Scotland, and Spain. Recognized for his interest in game management, conservation, forestry, and shotgunnig, Bill was presented with a Parker shotgun when he finished his term as President of the Alabama State Bar Association.
A sporting clays shoot in his memory is a fitting tribute to this outstanding lawyer and outdoorsman.
